Research Study Title

Relationship and Friendship Breakups: Implications of Personality Traits and Attachment

Researchers Responsible for the Research Study

Purpose of the Research Study

  • Deepen our understanding of how relationship dissolution occurs.
  • Explore possible links between various aspects of personality, attachment and characteristics related to romantic and friendship breakups.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be 18 years old or over
  • Initiated a romantic relationship or friendship breakup within the last three years. This relationship must have lasted at least three months.

Reason and Nature of Participation

Your participation will consist of completing an online questionnaire. First, you will answer questions about your socio-demographic characteristics and the breakup(s) you have experienced. Next, you'll answer questions about your personality and attachment. Finally, you'll be asked to answer more specific questions about the breakup(s) and their emotional repercussions. This will take approximately 20 to 35 minutes of your time.

Potential Benefits

Your participation in this research project gives you the opportunity to reflect on different aspects of your personality and your interpersonal relationships. By participating, you will also be contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge on the links between personality and relationship dissolution.

Potential Disadvantages and Risks

The research team considers that your participation should not entail any significant inconvenience, apart from giving up your time. It is possible that you may feel tired during the completion of the project. If so, you may wish to take a break before continuing.

It's also possible that thinking about your experience may lead you to experience negative emotions and perhaps some discomfort when answering one or more of the questionnaires about your past breakups. If this is the case and you would like more support, we invite you to refer yourself to a professional counsellor by contacting the professional order of psychologists in your area.

You can download a list of mental health resources at the bottom of the page.

What's more, it will be impossible to destroy your data if you terminate your participation, as no personally identifiable information is collected..

Confidentiality, Sharing, Monitoring and Publishing

No personal information is requested or collected, except for socio-demographic information such as your gender, age, and other details. Participation is anonymous. The only exception is your e-mail address, which may be requested if you wish to take a break and complete the questionnaires later. Your e-mail address will be requested in order to send you a link that will enable you to resume the survey where you left off.

Furthermore, neither your IP address nor your email address will be included in the data, and no cookies will be stored on your computer. Information about the security measures taken by the online data collection provider can be found at the following address: https://simplesondage.com/plateforme/securite-et-confidentialite

During the active phase of the research, raw data, i.e., anonymous data, will be stored on the University of Sherbrooke's secure online storage platform, Microsoft OneDrive, and the only people who will have access to it are the student and the supervisor. These individuals will have signed a confidentiality agreement.

The data collected will be used for a doctoral thesis and scientific publications. It will be stored on a secure platform at the University of Sherbrooke for a period of 10 years after the end of the collection period. It may be reused for similar projects.
